To get to the top of this spire in the Chamonix Aiguilles, France, climbing pioneer Miriam O’Brien Underhill scaled up its center ridge with her camera held between her teeth in 1929. Underhill was the first woman to conquer several challenging peaks, including the Matterhorn and was famous for “manless Alpine climbing”. (On these treks she climbed only with other women.)
